INITIATE.MY's
collaborative model

is a powerful example of how CSOs can support rehabilitation and reintegration at a grassroots level. Their initiative was born out of the recognition that while government programs are essential, they often lack the community-level support that former extremist/inmates need to fully reintegrate.

Mental Health Focus

Recognizing that many former extremist/inmates struggle with mental health challenges, INITIATE.MY prioritizes psychological well-being. By partnering with mental health professionals, they ensure that former extremist/inmates have access to trauma-informed care. This includes therapy sessions, psychological counseling, and long-term support for individuals suffering from PTSD.

Social Support

Beyond mental health, INITIATE.MY actively helps former extremist/inmates rebuild their lives by gathering resources from other CSOs that specialise in halfway homes, charity work, and other essential services. By collaborating with these organisations, INITIATE.MY aims to offer more holistic reintegration support, including mental health counselling, transitional housing, and access to social services. However, this support is still ad hoc and dependent on available resources.

Fostering Community and Family Roles

One of INITIATE.MY’s initiatives involve working closely with local religious and community leaders to foster ties or relationship between former extremist/inmates and community members. These efforts are particularly crucial as there is often opposition from local community leaders and residents in neighbourhoods where these individuals return. INITIATE.MY encourages community involvement in building trust, reduces stigma, and creates a safer space for dialogue. Family members also play a crucial role in reintegration by offering emotional support and fostering a positive environment to prevent re-radicalisation.
