Challenges of Social Reintegration for Former Extremist

Reintegrating former terrorist inmates into society is not an easy process, especially in regions like Poso, where people still remember the violence from past conflicts. The major challenges include stigmatization, mental health issues, and community distrust.

Stigmatization and Rejection by the Community

Many former terrorist inmates, like those from Poso, face rejection when trying to return home. People may still see them as dangerous, making it hard for them to rebuild relationships. Former terrorist inmate Anang struggled with the stigma of being part of the Mujahidin Indonesia Timur (MIT) network. After his release, he faced distrust and avoidance from his community because of his past involvement.

Mental Health and Psychological Challenges

Former terrorist inmates often deal with trauma, guilt, and anxiety. These psychological barriers make reintegration even harder, especially when they are met with rejection from their community. Udin, another former terrorist inmate, experienced deep shame and isolation due to his past. Without proper mental health support, many like him struggle to reconnect with their communities
